The clearest reason for music, for culture, is that it gives us meaning,’ says Yo-Yo Ma in the opening of the advert for the new documentary The Music of Strangers, released in the United Kingdom on Friday 18 November.

The documentary follows the Silk Road Ensemble, performers and composers from over 20 countries and cultures, on a world tour. The group was founded in 2000 by Yo-Yo Ma, who was inspired by the exchange of ideas and traditions along the historical Silk Road.

'The musicians of the Silk Road ensemble have now been together for 16 years, and we've marked points in our development with six albums,’ says Ma, ‘but when the film director Morgan Neville came along, a wonderful story-teller, we decided to let him look in our attic and give him the freedom to find a story there.'
